Based on surveys and excavations carried out as part of my PhD project ‘Repopulating the Braes: Shieling practice, upland seasonal industries and agricultural practice in post-medieval Scotland‘ I am excited to announce the publication of an account of the upland archaeology of Gleann Leac-na-Muidhe, Glencoe in the 2023 volume of the Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.

The article, titled ‘Survey and excavations investigating shieling and other upland practices in Gleann Leac-na-Muidhe, Glencoe‘ will be available online here (https://doi.org/10.9750/PSAS.152).
Included in this piece is a report on two seasons of survey in Gleann Leac-na-Muidhe and the surrounding landscape, as well as two seasons of excavations of shieling huts, platforms, and an illicit stilling site. The article also sets out the case for the site of the ‘summerhouse of MacIain‘ which has now been excavated as part of the 2023 field school.

Thanks are owed to the SGSAH for funding this PhD research, as well as the Centre for Scottish and Celtic Studies, Scottish History Endowment and the Department of Archaeology at the University of Glasgow, the National Trust for Scotland Archaeological Services Team, and the Scottish Archaeological Research Framework for funding fieldwork, and to the Glencoe and Dalness Estate Team of the National Trust for Scotland, and Paolo Berardelli of Great Glen Ranch, for providing permissions to work within their properties and for logisitical support.
Thanks are also owed to all who participated in this programme of fieldwork including surveys in Autumn 2020, Spring 2021, Winter 2021 and Summer 2022, and Excavations in Summer 2021 and Spring 2022.
