Field School 2023: Open Day

On Saturday 12th we ran an open day for local community members and visitors at the National Trust for Scotland Visitor Centre in Glencoe along with the NTS Archaeologist Derek Alexander.

Our team having designed an audio-visual installation delivered this within the NTS turf house reconstruction where footage and audio recordings collected over the course of our fieldwork were deployed to explore stories related to life within Glencoe, and to augment the experience of visitors to this amazing space.

Outside our students engaged with members of the public through our artefact handling tables with finds arrayed from our current excavations, the recent excavations of the Gleann Leac-na-Muidhe shieling excavation, and the NTS excavations at Achtriochtan. Our students participated in this hands on storytelling with a gusto!

We also delivered family orientated archaeological activities such as clay pinch pot making, mini-excavations inspired by the archaeology of Glencoe, and ‘pottery conservation’ workshops.

Over the course of the day we were also visited by Cara Jones from CiFA who took time to talk with our students about the variety of careers available to them within archaeology and heritage.

Despite a very rainy day we welcomed huge numbers of visitors – thanks are owed to the NTS Glencoe and Dalness Team, Glencoe Folk Museum, Oban and Lochaber Times and local heritage societies for helping us advertise this event. We are looking forward to our second week of fieldwork and welcoming more local volunteers and visitors to the site!
